With the cost of energy expected to continue rising, energy consumption is on every business agenda. Within any building there are a number of fundamentals to energy saving.

• Lamp Wattage although obvious is often overlooked by designers. The impact over time of substituting an 11 Watt low energy lamp for an existing 60W GLS, or a 14W T5 fluorescent for a 36W T8 fluorescent is significant.

• Control of lighting either by a switching policy or more sophisticated control systems will provide long term energy consumption benefits.

• Luminaire Performance quantified in terms of the Light Output Ratio (LOR) enables the number of luminaries required to illuminate a specified area to be calculated. In general fewer luminaries with a high LOR are required to illuminate a space than those with a low LOR. The fewer the luminaries the lower energy consumption.
